Mikuni PHH40 Type T Overhaul, Exhaust Wrap on Headers, and Tuning

After the overhaul, I haven't been able to tune the Mikuni PHH40's correctly and this was evident, since there was smoke coming out of the exhaust and the smell of unburnt fuel was unmistakable. Not to mention that the spark plugs would often foul even just after two drives.

So I decided to have the twin carburetors tuned at Q.C. Tires in Banawa, which is a reputable tuning shop specifically for these kinds of carburetors and old school rides. Mang Orly, the owner of the shop, was actually the one who tuned the carbs after it had been overhauled.

I also had exhaust wraps installed over the headers to minimize the radiant heat and to cool down the Mikuni carbs. Total labor cost was at P3,400. Pricey indeed, but it was definitely worth it! Now there's only a hint of smoke from the carbs if you really look closely...it's barely noticable. And the irritating smoke of unburnt fuel is greatly minimized.

Bought a roll of exhaust wrap (50 ft.) at Banawe for P1,400.

Disassembled the headers in preparation for the exhaust wrap installation.

Exhaust wrap installation. I used stainless steel ties (Japan) to keep the wrap firmly in place over the headers

Headers and exhaust wrap installed. Clean workmanship.

Overhauled the Mikuni PHH40 Twin Carburetors

Every screw, bolt, and jets were disassembled and cleaned. They were very meticulous in their work...I was indeed imppressed.

They even dipped the carbs in a bucket full of corrosive chemicals to completely remove the dirt.

I also removed the air socks as it was consticting the air flow into the carbs. The engine does look more "racey" with the exhaust wraps installed IMHO.

The finished product.

My next project is to replace the clutch master and also have the carburetors properly jetted. There's a hesitation when I reach 2,500 rpm so I'll have to address that in the near future. But for now, I'm good!
